Calvino starts well for Great Britain

Joanne Calvino, lifted well to finish 2nd in the 53kg B group at the European Weightlifting Championships in Minsk, earlier today (Monday 5th April), after a good opening Snatch of 66kg, she then just failed to hold her second  and third attempts of 69kg.  This put her third in the group going into the Clean & Jerk.  Calvino was last of the group to take her first attempt in the Clean & Jerk, opening comfortably on 86kg, going into the lead with 89kg on her second attempt, then  a succesful final lift of 91kg to give a 157kg total, and toping the B group in the Clean & Jerk.   With the A group to follow tomorrow, this result will guarantee Calvino of a top 10 finish in the 53kg category.

Gareth Evans lifts tomorrow for Great Britain, and given the form he showed in qualifying for the Welsh Commonwealth Games team last weekend will be looking to hit PB’s across the board in this his first Major Championships as a senior lifter.
