London 2012 Competition Manager Appointed

With 871 days to the London 2012 Olympics and 904 days to the London 2012 Paralympics, Matthew Curtain, Competition Manager for both Olympic Weightlifting and Paralympic Powerlifting, working for the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games & Paralympic Games (known as LOCOG) is looking to keep everyone informed through regular updates on the British Weightlifting & World Class Lifting websites as well as series of articles via this medium.
Â
As a starting point, he has provided answers to the four most frequently asked questions that he has been asked since taking up his role in January.
Â
1. Where and when will the Weightlifting & Paralympic Powerlifting events take place?
Weightlifting and Paralympic Powerlifting, including Games-time training (and the Weightlifting test event), will take place at ExCeL in East London. ExCeL is hosting the biggest cluster of Olympic and Paralympic events, with 7 Olympic and 6 Paralympic sports. It is approximately 5 miles from the Olympic Park, which houses a number of major venues including the Olympic Stadium, Aquatics Centre, Velodrome, press and broadcast centres and the Olympic Village.
Dates for your diaries include:
27 July 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony
28 July – 08 August 2012 Weightlifting Competition (provisional)
12 August 2012 Olympic Games Closing Ceremony
The Weightlifting test event (format still to be agreed) will be held in December 2011.
29 August 2012 Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony
30 Aug – 05 September 2012 Paralympic Powerlifting Competition (provisional)
09 September 2012 Paralympic Games Closing Ceremony
Â
2. How can I get tickets?
A ticketing strategy is currently being developed, after consultation with the 26 Olympic and 20 Paralympic sports. Tickets will go on sale in 2011 and there will be an extensive marketing campaign prior to this. I will also update the British Weightlifting & World Class Lifting websites as ticketing information becomes available.
Â
3. How can I get involved?
There are a number of opportunities to participate – apart from competing!
Â
Workforce
There will be a small number of paid roles within LOCOG, although the structure, roles and start-dates have not yet been finalised. These positions will be advertised and/or notified through a number of websites, including london2012.com, uksport.gov.uk, bwla.co.uk and worldclasslifting.org
Â
National Technical Officials – Weightlifting
In line with the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) MoU and in concert with British Weightlifting, LOCOG will appoint 25 National Technical Officials (NTOs) to serve at the 2012 Olympic Games. The officials will supplement the International Technical Officials selected by the IWF. LOCOG will appoint the NTOs by 31 October 2011 and submit the list of names to the IWF for consultation and approval. LOCOG and IWF will agree their status in accordance with the IOC Accreditation Guide.
Â
National Technical Officials – Paralympic Powerlifting
In collaboration with BWLA, LOCOG will appoint 12 NTOs for the Paralympic Games. These officials will work together with the 30 ITOs, 2 Technical Delegates (TDs) and the 2 classifiers selected by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).
Â
Volunteers
There will be two kinds of volunteer – specialist and generalist:
-
Generalist volunteers will not need any special skills or qualifications and will receive full training. They might be given roles in areas such as event services, uniform distribution and Village operations.
Â
Volunteers will be recruited from across the UK, and must be 18 years of age by 1 January 2012. The official London 2012 Games-time Volunteer Programme launches this summer, when the application process will open. In the meantime, however, you can register your interest to be a volunteer via the Volunteering page of the London 2012 website (london2012.com), and receive email updates.
