PBs for WCL Squad Athletes
With the English Championships the first major event on the calendar in 2010, it was a great opportunity for lifters to put themselves in contention for the England Commonwealth Games Team, and to stake a claim for the Great Britain Team for the European Seniors and European Union (U23) Championships in April.and the European Youths in May 2010.
A number of WCL athletes recorded personal bests with the biggest improvements coming from Sonny Webster (IvyBridge / Michaela Breeze) who having moved up a weight category to 77kg put 12kg on his snatch and 10kg on his C&J to lift 105kg in snatch, 125kg in C&J and a 230kg total.
Helen Jewell (58kg) (IvyBridge / Michaela Breeze) after a nervous start in the snatch came back strongly to increase her C&J PB by 7kg and make the European senior selection total of 174kg. Joanne Calvino (53kg) (Crystal Palace / Keith Morgan) who is not long back from injury continues to lift consistently and nudge her PB up with a 160kg total and push for a place in the GB team for the Europeans.
Zoe Smith (63kg) lifted new PB of 78kg in snatch to give 176kg total, further adding to her tally of British Records. Hannah Powell 58kg (48kg) had a good start with a new PB of 52kg in snatch, but disappointingly could not repeat this in the C&J.
Other lifters outside the WCL squads who impressed were Chris Freebury (62kg), (Derby / Dave Sawyer / Cyril Martin) putting 11kg on his total and moving towards Commonwealth Games selection and U16 Athlete Alex Collier (62kg) (Team Manchester/ Terry Surridge) who just missed out on an U16 Record in the Clean and Jerk.
