World Class squad athletes in action at Fulda
The Fulda Cup is held in the quaint little village of Lochen, Austria, the small town came to life with lifters from all over Europe attending. In action from the World Class Lifting Squads were the WCL GB Team of Hannah Powell, Zoe Smith and Sonny Webster, Craig Cafrey representing Kilmarnock Club and Amy Hamilton representing Palace of Arts.
Friday afternoon saw Hannah Powell compete in the first of 2 girls groups, she snatched 42kg, 44kg and 46kg for 3 out of 3, she then went on to clean and jerk 60kg, 63kg and finally 65kg which she narrowly missed, Hannah comfortably took the title and also won best overall lifter for her age group. Hannah showed great character in her performance considering she arrived Friday morning due to her commitment to GCSE exams on Thursday.
Zoe Smith competed in the second group Zoe having just got back into training after recovering from a back injury. However she still showed her class by snatching 66kg and clean and jerking 80kg to win the group and again won the best overall lifter for her age group. Amy Hamilton opened at 65 in the snatch and then just missed 67 twice, she then opened with a good lift of 70 in clean & jerk and then folded on 75 1st attempt and then cleaned but slight elbow touch on 2nd still jerked it easy though it was disallowed.
Saturday morning saw Sonny take to the platform in incredible style creating PB’s on his way to snatching 86 and jerking 106kg. He needed 111kg to win the group and he put all his effort into the clean but it wasn’t to be on the day, Sonny took a well earned 2nd place and also was crowned best lifter for his age group.
Craig Carfrey, opened at 84kg which he missed and then got easily on his 2nd time attempt. He then went up 88kg which on the day was just too heavy. He clean and jerked 105kg easily and then went up to 110kg which he cleaned but missed the jerk , he then missed his 3rd attempt of 117kg. His total of 194kg was a new PB by 3kgs.
Overall the competition was a huge success and gave all our lifters a chance to put in a solid performance before the European youth’s.
