Competition In The Kitchen

One of the biggest challenges for any athlete re-locating to a central training hub or when away on training camp is that of change in lifestyle. Nutrition can be one of the biggest challenges when it comes to lifestyle management, particularly in the case of younger athletes who may be used to having meals pre-prepared or cooked for them at home or in school. Suddenly they are placed into an environment where they are expected to prepare foods and snacks which match their training needs, often without the necessary cooking skills or thought processes behind this task. This was highlighted recently by the Sports Science team at World Class Lifting under the guidance of Brian Cunniffe.

Powerlifters prepare for IPF 21st World Bench Press Championships and 2nd World Junior Bench Press Championships.
Following a successful training camp in Indiana, based out of Jason Irving’s home gym, the WCL powerlifters have moved up to Killeen, Texas, to join the Great Britain Powerlifting Federation team for the World Bench Press Championships which start on Monday 24th May. Athletes from the WCL squad who were training in Indiana were Adam Alderman, Jason Irving and Roxanne Lucock. They will be joined by Natalie Blake in Texas. This event is a great opportunity for these athletes to compete on a world stage, in front of large crowds, for Great Britain, before they travel out to the IPC Powerlifting World Championships in Kuala Lumpur. Three of the athletes currently hold the Unequipped Bench Press British Records, Adam Alderman (56kg BW, 132.5kg), Natalie Blake (52kg BW, 97.5kg) and Roxanne Lucock (U18, 48kg BW, 70kg), and all will be looking to further improve these this week. Following this event the squad will fly back to the UK in time for the IPC British Powerlifting Championships in Stoke Mandeville on the 5th June. |

Webster steps up in Valencia
Ivybridge’s Sonny Webster lifting in the B group of the 77 kg class at the European Youth Championships in Valencia, today , found himself ranked 5th in the group on starting totals. Having to wait until four lifters had completed all of their lifts he came out to open on 103 kg which he managed to hold, for a successful start to the competition. He then went up to his curret PB of 108 kg to give himself another lifter between himself and his next attempt. In this attempt, his left foot slipped as he went into the bottom of the snatch and he went forward onto his knees as the weight was above his head, fortunately he dropped the bar and rolled backwards, avoiding injury. Fortunately the Finnish lifter had also dropped his 108 kg attempt, so while he came back out. it gave Sonny a moment to refocus before his last attempt in the snatch at 108 kg.

Smith in stunning form to take Silver
It was a great day for Zoe Smith at the European Youth Weightlifting Championships in Vallencia, Spain. Competing in a group of 11 athletes, the entry totals showed that it was going to be very competitive for the medals, with any one of five athletes capable of taking the honours. In the snatch, Zoe came out earlier than her opponents, making a very comfortable 74kg, to get her name on the scoreboard. She did, however, have the crowd on the edge of their seats, starting her lift with only three seconds remaining on the clock! She then had to wait some time before her second successful attempt of 80 kg. Her last lift of 84 kg, which was a 6kg PB, she made it look easy, suggesting that she can still lift more. The 84 kg was good enough to take bronze in the snatch, behind Nesihan Okumus (TUR), whose best was 85kg, and Diana Akhmetova (RUS) who set a new European youth record of 93 kg.

Great Britain Team arrives in Spain
Following a nervous 24 hours where volcanic ash looked likely to disrupt travel plans, the Great Britain Youth Weightlifting team have arrived in Vallencia for the European Youth Weightlifting Championships. Both Zoe Smith and Sonny Webster looked sharp in their first training session, on Tuesday, in the makeshift training hall which normally serves as a hotel garage.
Zoe lifts in the A group (58kg category) on Thursday afternoon and will face stiff opposition in what is going to be a closely contested final with around five athletes all posting entry totals of between 175-180 kg. Sonny lifts on Friday morning in the B group and will be looking to lift a personal best to put himself in the top half of the field.
