Blake secures 4th
Three times Paralympian, Natalie Blake, went into the IPC Powerlifting World Championships ranked 2nd on the IPC World Rankings, however when the start list was released it showed that a number of athletes had either moved from other weight categories or had qualified after the ranking lists had been published, on her current performances Natalie was now ranked ~5th.
Natalie decided to open safely with a lift of 90 kg, which was given as a good lift by all 3 judges, looking at the rest of the athletes in the group still to lift this should have put her in 4th, but Zhiping Wong of China opening with 102.5 kg was given a no lift 2-1 against by the referees, so Blake was in 3rd after the first round. Natalie then went up to 92.5 kg. Again a confident lift to remain in 3rd as Zhiping again was given a no lift. With the athletes in 4th and 5th, Naima Elyousri, (MAR) and Miriam Isela Aguilar Jimenez (MEX) going up to 95kg, Natalie would need 97.5 kg to stay ahead of them as they would both beat her on body weight if they lifted the same total. Both these lifters were both unsuccessful at 95kg Natalie did not get the 97.5 kg and Wong was succesful with her final attempt of 102.5 kg, confirming Natalie in 4th. The event was won by Tamara Podpalnaya (RUS) with a best lift of 120 kg confirming her dominance in this event. Natalie stated 'I was disappointed not to be in the medals but know that I have 2 years to London and am confident that I can challenging for a medal then'. Natalie was coached on the day by Great Britain Head Coach Nicola Vaughn-Ellis and supported by Great Britain Squad Coach Dan Wagner.
This concludes the Great Britain's team participation at the IPC Worlds which go on to Friday, overall it has been a good performance by the Great Britain team with Zoe Newson crowned World Junior Champion and both Zoe and Natalie Blake remaining in the top 6 on the IPC Rankings which is the standard required by the IPC for being offered a place for London 2012 Paralympics. Adam Alderman in has also demonstrated that he is capable of challenging for a London 2012 place, which for the men is a top 10 IPC Ranking.
The team has been without Paralympians Anthony Peddle, Jason Irving and Ali Jawad, due to medical reasons but all three athletes have their sights firmly set on London and will be looking to establish themselves in the IPC top ten rankings in 2011..
Full results will be posted for the IPC Powerlifting 2010 World Champioships will be posted on the IPC Powerlifting website.

Newson takes Junior World Title in style
At her first IPC Powerlifting World Championships, Zoe Newson (Suffolk Spartans), found herself the youngest lifter there, undaunted by this she looked confident with her opening lift of 77.50kg in the 40kg category, which put her into 5th place at the end of the first round in the Senior World Championships and 1st in the Juniors. She then put a further 5kg on the bar, going up to 82.5kg and again looked good with all three referees giving it as a good lift. With the lifter from Vietnam, Thai Hong Nguyen missing at 85kg, Zoe went into 4th overall.   Going into the 3rd round Zoe was already confirmed as Junior World Champion and was looking to equal her Junior European Record with a lift of 85kg, unfortunately she was given a no lift, if she had lifted it she would have been on an equal total with Tiecan Fu (CHN) in third place however Fu would still have taken Bronze in the Senior Championships as she had the lighter body weight.   Zoe stated that 'I am really happy to have won Gold today and be crowned the World Junior Champion, its been a great experience, and will help me for the Commonwealth Games in October'. Zoe was coached by her Personal Coach Louise Pennell and supported by Great Britain Squad Coach, Dan Wagner. Further information can be found on the Suffolk Spartans website www.suffolkspartans.co.uk.
Adam Alderman also made his debut today, for Great Britain in the 48kg class as a senior lifter. He was successful with his first lift of 127.5kg, and found himself in direct competition with Yingguo Xiao (CHN)  who also opened with a good lift at 127.5kg. Both then went up to 132.5kg wih Alderman getting his on a 2-1 referees decision and Xiao failing on a 2-1 against. This 2nd lift for Alderman was a PB in an IPC ranked event. Knowing that 135kg would be enough to beat the Chinese athlete, Alderman attacked the bar but was unlucky not the get the lift.  Xiao was successful with his 3rd attempt at 132.5kg beating Alderman on body weight, both athletes finished 8th and 9th respectively.  The event was won by Omar Qarada, setting a World Record of 173kg in the process. Adam was coached by Great Britain Head Coach, Nicola Vaughan-Ellis and supported by Great Britain Squad Coach, Dan Wagner.
Natalie Blake (52kg) lifts tomorrow afternoon.

IPF World Bench Press Championships Texas, 24th-28th May 2010

First lifter from the WCL squad was Adam Alderman, weighing in at 47.1kg. Adam finished with a credible fourth place. He competed against lifters in the 56kg class,  which is two weight classes heavier than his IPC weight category, and all of whom wore bench shirts.  Adam has been working hard on improving his technique which was evident when watching him lift on this world platform, as he as he gained eight white lights out of nine from both the referees and jury.  His lifts were 127.5kg. 130kg and 132.5kg.
